SOCIETY of ST. VINCENT de PAUL The Immaculate Heart of Mary and Christ the King conferences are part of the District Council of Madison - Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Seventeen conferences in Catholic churches across Dane County serve this mission: We are a Catholic lay organization in which members join together in friendship to grow spiritually by providing person-to-person services to our neighbors in need. Notice the three words that describe the purpose of the Society - Spirituality, Service and Friendship. Members are to grow in holiness through friendship with and service to neighbors in need. We use this language, “neighbors in need” intentionally to reflect the person-to-person, relational nature of the home visit. Neighbors have neighbors, friends have friends. Clients do not have clients. They have case managers or social workers. Vincentian spirituality teaches us to “See the face of Christ in our neighbors and be the face of Christ to our neighbors.” It is a deep recognition of the human dignity of each person we visit. St. Vincent de Paul, our patron saint, said, “Go to the poor. You will see Christ.” This service - going to the poor - guides our members to grow in faith. Service is the most common reason people join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. As Catholics, our faith demands that we prioritize the needs of those who are poor. Becoming a member of the Society allows us to do so in an important and tangible way. During a home visit, we hear their stories, see their circumstances, have the opportunity to pray with them, and help them overcome a difficult situation. We recall the words of Bl. Rosalie Rendu, “Love is your first gift to the poor.” Friendship is often the reason members stay in the Society. In our monthly meetings, we hear the experiences of other Vincentians and their home visits. We pray together and for one another. We find new connections within our Church family. Want to know more? At the end of each Mass this weekend, you’ll hear from a Vincentian in our pastorate about their vocation. Vincentians will be available to talk with you after each Mass this weekend. You’ll find them at the back of the church and in the gathering spaces. They will have information about upcoming meeting dates, times and locations. They will invite you to grow with us in spirituality, service, and friendship as a member of the Society. Next week: The Spirituality of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul |
