The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord Masses:
Sunday, Dec. 24

8pm at STP
Monday, Dec. 25
12am at IHM
9am at STP & CTK
(no 10:30am Mass as previously noted)
Christmas is always a holy day of obligation, even when it falls on a Monday, immediately after the Fourth Sunday of Advent. This means that there are two separate, consecutive obligations to attend Mass: one for the Sunday and one for Christmas. Fulfilling these obligations will always require attending two separate Masses, but there is some flexibility in precisely how this is done.
Any obligation to attend Mass can be fulfilled by attending Mass on the day itself or on the prior evening, which is usually considered to start around 4pm. In the present case, then, the Sunday obligation can be fulfilled by attending any Mass on Saturday evening or any time on Sunday, and the Christmas obligation can be fulfilled at any Mass on Sunday evening or any time on Monday. Thus, from Saturday evening through Monday, there are a number of combinations of Masses that would fulfill the two, separate obligations to attend Mass. Among these options, it would be ideal, even though it is not required, to fulfill the obligations in a way that includes attending the liturgical celebrations proper to each day, as opposed to, e.g., attending the Christmas Eve Mass to fulfill the Sunday obligation and the Christmas morning Mass to fulfill the Christmas obligation. A person who does attend Mass twice in a day may receive Communion at both Masses.
As an aside, this Sunday I joyfully celebrate my 13th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. I am so grateful to God for my vocation as a Catholic priest. Thank you for all of your prayers and support.
